In Memory of Sugar, best friend for 16 years Writers sends memories of her little dog, who loved to come to Kentucky, whose cremains will be returned to the Merritt family farm on Crooked Creek, in Norhern Adair Co., KY for a final resting place By Beverly Merritt On Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, 2010, I had to make one of the most difficult decisions of my life. My dog, Sugar, my best friend of almost 16 years, became ill over the weekend. I took her to our local Animal Hospital to be assessed for treatment. While there, it became clear that treatment would only cause her more pain. At 10:30pm that night, my precious dog was put to sleep. I was allowed to hold her and to talk to her while this was being done. Thankfully, this was very peaceful for Sugar. Unfortunately, it was very painful for me and I remain pretty distraught. We went everywhere together; she even attended a couple of band competitions with me. She loved coming to Kentucky for visits and playing with my little cousins Lynsey, Emily, and Arlia. Sugar was cremated at a wonderful place here called Paws, Whiskers, & Wags. On my next trip home, I'll bring her remains to be buried on our family farm on Crooked Creek in Adair County. Veterinarians and others who work with animals must be exceptionally special people. Everyone here was so kind and compassionate - all were crying after the event... and Sugar was treated with the utmost respect. She was not afraid, she was made comfortable, and she knew I was with her, just as she has been with me through many tough times. Below is a poem I was given by the staff at Paws, Whiskers, & Wags. I want to share it with those of you who have lost a beloved pet. Rainbow Bridge Poem There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge, there is a land of meadows, hills, and valleys with lush green grass.-Anonymous This story was posted on 2010-06-03 12:12:53
