Another Eppitomie: It's Wild Babies Year at CM

An excellent image from Ebenezer by Judy Corbin, along with a picture of Joe the Juvenile Squirrel from Bub Polston this morning created a Eureka moment here at CM central:
This is Wild Babies Year at ColumbiaMagazine!
Usually, such a insight would have led us to brand it much more quickly; to plan to print tee shirts. Have a logo flash on the screen CNN fashion. It does bring to mind a long held CM cause: To endear the Opossum to the public. Next to unsung internet editors, and you, whereever you are, Opossums may be the most underappreciated contributors to our society.

They are a somewhat unloved and too often et furry animal.

The urge to something nice for them comes from a favorite children's book character, Oopie Opossum, created by my first wife Linda, and missing a photo from the Flood of 2010, a wet pedestrian Opossum (we don't use the "P" word in reference to these friends) hurrying along Corbin Richards Road on May 2, 2010. It was enough to make a Tree Hugger forget about shedding more tears each morning for the whales.

It was a sad, but inspiring sight.

Opossum courage is not a bad behavior model either.

The Getaway: They never made it out of the drive

2007-01-14 - Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
Despite appearances, these two never made their getaway. A stern Granddad, locked out and reflected in the mirror, had the camera--and the keys. The Grevans--Graham and Evan--were in Columbia on rock plunking business at Town Creek a few days ago.

Wildlife of Adair Co., KY: Little foxes of Tabor by Tony Harvey

2008-05-07 - Tabor Community, Adair County, KY - Photo By Tony Harvey.
Wildlife Photographer Tony Harvey visited the home of these little red foxes, who live not far from his residence in the Tabor Community on KY 704. He writes, "I got really lucky today with the help of John Ford of Curry's Floor covering, who directed my attention to a den of Foxes on nearby farm, which I choose not to disclose so these little guys will have a chance to live on." The little guys readily posed for this family portrait on Tuesday, May 6, 2008. Clicking Read More Accesses the "Today, Wed. May 7, 2008" feature with Today's Photo Album. The Goose Family at Bliss, KY: There are six babies

2010-04-23 - Photo by Kenneth Scott. Bliss, Adair Co., KY
A number of people sent in guesses on the size of the Canada Goose family in residence in Bliss, KY. In the earlier photo, there are actually six, according to Frances Salyers. "There's one baby up under the feet of the top goose," she said. It's hard to see, but in this photo by Bliss Mayor Kenneth Scott, all six of the youngsters are distinctly visible.

Birds of Kentucky: Bird nest in gravel. What bird? (Killdeer)

2010-05-18 - Photo by Judy Corbin. Ebenezer community, South Green Co., KY
"Just wondering?" Judy Corbin writes with this photo taken Monday, May 17, 2010. "What kind of bird would have a nest in the rocks to lay her eggs? The rocks are dug out into a nesting area, and the egg was laid by the momma sometime today."
Thanks for this wonderful photo. It goes with our unannounced 2010 theme of Wild Babies. If anyone is for sure, please send the answer to Judy Corbin's question using the Comments button with this photo. A first guess is that it is an egg laid by one of the most entertaining creatures living with us, the killdeer. Learned confirmation: "Judy's photo is that of a killdeer egg," writes Brave Jim of the Buckeye Tundra, which he signs, "Jim (from north of the Green River, where the penguins rule)."
