Whitfield announces funds for Breeding AVFD South Adair Co. group gets $135,963 By Kristin Walker News from Rep. Ed Whitfield WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Ed Whitfield (KY-01) announced today that the Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded a $135,963 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA). "During tough economic times, it is essential we do all that we can to aid local fire departments which protect our communities," Whitfield said. "I am pleased the Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded these funds to help keep the citizens of Adair County safe." The fire department received the grant through the Operations and Safety program. These funds may be used for training, equipment, personal protective equipment, wellness and fitness, and health and safety modifications to stations and facilities. The award comes as part of the Fiscal Year 2009 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program. These grants aim to enhance first responders' ability to protect the health and safety of the public with respect to fire-related hazards. Since 2001, AFG has provided approximately $4 billion in grants to first-responder organizations to obtain much-needed emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles and training.
