Chance, KY: Recollections of Uncle Olie Rowe

Writer says there can be no mention of Chance without remembering Uncle Olie (O.G.) Rowe and his little low-ceiling store between Old Chance and Last Chance or how Mr. Rowe brought the world to Chance with his little black and white Tv
About: Scenic Adair Co KY Last Chance Store Chance KY

By Billy Joe Fudge

Just a tid bit of information and a suggestion concerning the address of the old Chance Store and Post Office.

Of course it goes without saying that, in the beginning and for several decades thereafter, with the store building being the post office that the address would have been "Jim Smack" in town center.

I really hate to digress in the middle of this story about an address but does anyone out there have any idea who Jim Smack would have been? Was he just a local expression or did his fame as the ultimate definition of a pin point location carry beyond the wooded confines of the Great Wooded South?

At any rate I would suggest that the address for the Chance Store and residence be 007 Chance Road. One reason is that there was and is a graveled pulloff at the intersection in the edge of the yard.

That is where I remember the mailbox after the community lost its post office. Secondly, I think it would be demeaning to the history and name of the store and community to now list the address as Walnut Grove Road.

As a personal addendum I can never think of the community of Chance without images of Uncle Olie Rowe and his store popping into my mind.

His store was located approximately a mile from the Chance Post Office in the Northwestern suburbs of Chance.

Uncle Olie's store ceiling would cause even those of the most moderate height or many with extreme self confident pride to bow at certain locations or face the surety of scalp or even worse, skull injuries.

In spite of its size, with a black and white TV and fuzzy reception there was no better place to catch a day game of the World Series during the early `70's while on fire patrol for the Kentucky Division of Forestry.
Amen and Amen. The only problem created is that now there is a critical shortage of pictures of the Rowe store at Chance, and a need for a more complete biography of Mr. Rowe on CM. Any help will be appreciated. Also, some clarification: Would Original Chance have been the actual capital of Harvey's Ridge? Could the same hold true after the Post Office was moved down the road, almost into Cumberland County to Chance Upon Walnut Grove RD?
