COLUMBIA, KY - A pair of Lindsey Wilson College senior student-athletes were named Student-Athletes of the Year at Honors Convocation on Thursday.

Lindsey Wilson seniors Krista Burton and Weston Pope earned Student-Athletes of the Year for their academic, athletic and civic achievements throughout their careers.

"Krista and Weston have always demonstrated the characteristics that makes them worthy of the title, Lindsey Wilson College Student-Athlete of the Year," LWC athletics director Willis Pooler said. "They are true student-athletes and we congratulate them."

Krista Burton is three-time NAIA All-American golfer

Burton, a Jamestown, KY, native, is a three-time NAIA All-American and a three-time All Mid-South Conference performer in women's golf. She captured the 2007 NAIA Individual National Championship while leading the Blue Raiders to a national runner-up finish.

In 2009, she earned Mid-South Conference Player of the Year honors.

Burton has helped the Blue Raiders to three straight NAIA National Tournaments and four straight MSC regular season titles. She owns a program-record 16 individual tournament titles.

In the classroom, Burton has also been a two-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete - reserved for juniors and seniors - and a three-time Academic All Mid-South Conference Scholar Athlete - for sophomores and above. Burton owns a cumulative grade point average of 3.95 on a 4.0 scale.

In addition to her LWC student-athlete award, Burton was also named the Mid-South Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The award was voted on by the MSC institution's faculty athletic representative and awarded to one senior from the eight conference institutions.

Weston Pope is a 2008 USA Cycling National champion

Pope, a Clarksville, IN, native, captured the 2008 USA Cycling Mountain Bike Dual Slalom national title. In addition to his national championship, Pope also owns a national runner-up and a fourth place finish in the same event.

During his career, Pope has helped the Blue Raider cycling program to four top-five finishes at the Mountain Bike nationals.

Prior to becoming a national champion, Pope used the world stage to win the 2007 BMX World Championships in the 17-24 age division.

Despite the fact that USA Cycling - the cycling program's governing body - does not hand out academic awards, Pope continues to excel in the classroom. His cumulative GPA is 3.91 on a 4.0 scale.

In addition to earning the LWC student-athlete honor, Pope was also named a Begley Scholar for outstanding academic performance, leadership and service. The award is selected by a four-person committee, including LWC President William T. Luckey, Jr.

"Krista and Weston are outstanding students, athletes and individuals, and are very deserving of this prestigious award," Pooler said. "This award celebrates the culmination of their contributions and dedication to their team, our department and to Lindsey Wilson College."
