Adair Co., KY, unemployment is lowest in area

Credit for position primarily given to growth at Lindsey Wilson and results from work of Columbia-Adair County Economic Development Authority, CJE Ann Melton says.

By Ed Waggener
Figures just released by the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training for March, 2010, unemployment show that Adair Co., KY, had the lowest rate of joblessnesses of any of the CM Seven-County area counties.

March 2010 Unemployment rates
  1. Adair Co., KY unemployment rate: 11.4%
  2. Taylor Co., KY, unemployment rate, 11.6%
  3. Casey Co., KY unemployment rate, 11.9%
  4. Russell Co., KY unemployment rate, 12.7%
  5. Cumberland Co., KY unemployment rate, 14.1%
  6. Metcalfe Co., KY unemployment rate, 14.8%
Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton said it comes as no surprise to her. "There are two major factors," she said. "One is the phenomenal expansion at Lindsey Wilson College. That's evident to everyone," she said.

Judge Melton added, "just as important is the way the Columbia-Adair County Economic Development Authority has been working to help raise employment with the addition of a lot of smaller businesses, and together, Lindsey and the EDA are proving to be successful," and added, "that being said, we still have a lot of work to do to get the local economy where it can be."

Judge Melton said she really believes that Adair County will be seeing results from the hard work which has gone into Economic Development over the past decades.

"As the economy begins to really flourish," she said, "we'll be recognizing that there have been a number of unsung heroes, who haven't been appreciated in the past, who will be recognized for laying the groundwork for what is happening today."The Adair County March rate is well below the 12.% rate seen in February, and is down 0.4% from the recession era one year ago.

Adair County does still lag the national rate of 9.7% significantly; but is very near the state average of 10.9% for the March 2010 period.
