Edges are good places to see birds By Wendy Butler Burt News from Adair County Bird Watchers Good birdwatching can take place in the comfort of your own home as anyone who participated in the Great Backyard Bird Count knows. But sometimes you want to get out, to see something new. Where should you go? A good rule of thumb is to go someplace with lots of "edge" - someplace like the Corbin's Bend area of the Green River Lake Wildlife Management Area. "Edge" is where at least two different kinds of habitat intersect - where pasture joins a pine woods, a hayfield meets a brushy hedgerow, where water (stream, lake, wetland) crosses land, etc. Edge provides more food and shelter for more species than any individual habitat. How often have you walked in the deep woods and noticed few birds but, when you start coming out of the woods, you hear lots of birdsong and see birds flitting in and out of the fields and the woods? The Adair County Bird Watchers will find lots of edge on its birdwalk tomorrow, Saturday, March 27, 2010. The birdwalk will start at 7amCT at Corbin's Bend. The AC Bird Watchers will have the opportunity to walk along the edge of wetlands, the lake, woods, scrubland, fallow fields, etc. We expect to find birds typical of all those habitats and, who knows, we may find a surprise that early morning, early Spring birdwatchers often see. We invite you to join us. -Wendy Burt The Adair County Bird Watchers will be taking a 1 hour plus bird walk with ornithologist Wendy Butler Burt on Saturday, March 27, 2010, at Corbin's Bottoms, 3363 Corbin's Bend RD, Columbia, KY. at 7amCT.
