Presentations of Certificates of Appreciation will be made 11:00am on Saturday. Adair County High will meet Glasgow High at noon at the ACHS Baseball Field, 336 Gen. John Adair DR, Columbia, KY.

By Julie Brockman

Volunteers, including players, coaches, parents and members of the public have worked extremely hard right up to today renovating the Adair County High School Baseball field.

This morning everybody is invited to a big "Renovation Celebration" at the baseball field, 336 Indian DR, Columbia, KY, at 11amCT at which time several members of the public will be recognized for their donation of time and/or money to our projects.

At 12 noon CT, Coach Ryan McQueary's Adair County Baseball team hosts Glasgow High School, and everyone is invited to stay for that game.

Some notes from ACHS Baseball History:Much of Indian Baseball is tied to Lindsey Wilson Blue Raider Baseball, and outstanding Adair County players have gone on to college baseball careers at other schools.

Renovation Celebration is a significant advance for baseball in Adair County, coming in the same year as the magnificent new Lindsey Wilson Park was opened.

  • Derek Cape, current pitcher for Lindsey Wilson College, was featured on ColumbiaMagazine.com as MSC Pitcher of the Week recently, is an ACHS graduate of Adair County Baseball.

  • Several others who have received scholarships to play at Lindsey Wilson College include:

  • Ryan McQueary, LWC 1994-1998 our current coach

  • Jeremy McQueary, LWC 2000-2004

  • Troy Young, LWC 1990-1992 who is currently principal of Adair County High School

  • Nic Genakos, LWC 2000-2004

  • Jeff Luttrell, LWC 1989-91

  • Adam Coomer, LWC 2005-2008

  • Jeremy Giles, LWC 2005-08

  • Joseph Willis, -currently playing at LWC
All the dates are the years played at LWC. The dates they played at ACHS would be four years before the dates given.Troy Young and Jeff Luttrell began careers at LWC and then transferred to Cumberland College.

Harry Loy played at ACHS from 1960-1963 and then played at Union College from 64-67. I'm sure there are many, many more.

More information on past Adair County Indians will be welcome. And, we expect a large number of former Adair County High School baseball players to be on hand for today's event.

High School Baseball Coach Ryan McQueary pitches from a ramp built by boosters for batting practice to Joe Grider, batting.. McQueary was a pitcher for Adair County in his high school days, and like so many other baseball greats from the school, earned a baseball scholarship to Lindsey Wilson College. Now, with the renovated Adair County High School field, at the same time as the inaugural season for Lindsey Wilson's new park across town, Columbia, KY can boast two of South Central Kentucky's baseball venues. Charles Breeding is on the left, Blake Perkins is on the right, foreground.

Adair County High School 2010 baseball schedule

One of the many shy, unsung heroes who made Renovation Celebration a reality for Adair County High School baseball hid behind a large, full color baseball schedule for the Indians' 2010 season. The location was the neat little hotdog and soft drink concession stand at the field. For the names of the players, see ACHS team photo by Traci Pooler

Locker room is now a source of pride

2010-03-20 - Adair Co. High School, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Until this year, the locker room for the Adair County High School baseball team had been more of a catch-all storage area than a useful program adjunct. Work on the renovation not quite complete, but it is already a source of great pride. Quotes, such as this one from perhaps the greatest athlete of all time, Kentuckian Muhammad Ali, inspire the players to reach for higher goals. The locker room is located in the back of the Adair County High School bus garage, now in urgent need of replacement, an event which might see the baseball team have the whole building as a hand me down.

Friends of the Indians

2010-03-20 - Indian Field, 336 Gen. John Adair DR, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Baseball booster stalwart Bobby Morrison was putting finishing putting the fasteners on the Friends of the Indians Sign, which contains the names of some 200 donors who gave a total of some $2,000 to the program. Morrison said that, in all, nearly $100,000 in improvements have been made to the field in preparation for the 2010 season. Some $60,000 of that amount came in the form of new lighting for the field. Another $15,000 was raised with Adair County's victory in the Kelloggs Cereal Company's Field of Dreams, with the remainder coming in the form of donations of time and/or material. "It was not uncommon," Morrison said, "for individuals to leave their jobs to help with the project. Steve Cheatham, whose company builds fences, was out here for three full days with his equipment helping us with setting posts. Many others also gave generously." All individuals who helped will be recognized at the Renovation Celebration.
