CU plans art scholarship competition March 27, 2010 Winners of competition will be announced day of event By Joan C. McKinney News from Campbellsville University CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - Campbellsville University is searching for talented high school seniors to compete for two art scholarships worth a total of $12,000. The university's annual art scholarship competition and workshop will be Saturday, March 27, beginning at 10amET/9amCT in room 100 of the Art Building at 205A University Drive, Campbellsville, KY. The recipients of these scholarships may also receive performance grant awards and other forms of financial aid. Attending students who meet certain criteria may be considered for a performance grant scholarship in art as well. Linda J. Cundiff, professor and chair of the department of art, said registration and submission of a portfolio will begin at 10amET/9amCT in the art building with a free workshop in ceramics at 10:30amET/9:30amCT in Gosser Fine Arts Center at 210 University Drive, Campbellsville. A brunch will be provided for students, teachers or parents as guests of theuniversity at 11:30amET/9:30amCT. in the Winters Dining Hall. Interviews with students and examination of portfolios by art faculty are at 12:15pmET/11:15amCT. The announcement of the winning competitive art scholarships and performance grants recipients will be at 2pmET/1pmCT in room 100 of the art building. A student interested in the scholarship competition or in the performance grants must present a portfolio of his or her finest work to the art faculty at 10amET/9amCT, but those wanting to participate should contact Cundiff and send in an application before the event. "This is an opportunity for talented, high school seniors who will be first-time freshmen to compete for an art scholarship," Cundiff said. "The winning students will receive $750 scholarship monies per semester for the duration of eight semesters while they attend Campbellsville University as an art major," she said. The recipients must be art majors. She said the competing students must have an academic standing equivalent to or higher than a 3.0 grade point average (B average) and maintain that average in college work at Campbellsville University if chosen for these scholarships. The recipients of the scholarships may also receive performance grant awards and other forms of financial aid.Each competing student, with his or her teacher's advice, is to select three-15 of the student's "strongest, finest" examples of his/her artwork to take to the competition, Cundiff said. "The pieces selected should show ambition in idea, execution, style and technical skill," she said."Of the pieces selected, the student may select options of what kinds of media tobring," she said. The three-dimensional work can consist of either sculpture, ceramics, fibers, weaving or mixed media; black and white pieces including a variety of media including graphite, charcoal, chalk, scratch board, pen and ink, ink wash drawings and black and white media or mixed media, and colored pieces including oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, colored pencils, tempera, color prints or other color media. Cundiff said, "There should be a variety of themes and subject matter to include figurative or portrait work, landscape, still life or other ideas and themes." Cundiff said all work must be original and by the student. She said no pieces copied from another artist's work will be accepted and no work based upon pre-packaged kits and no photomechanically reproduced prints will be accepted.
