Criterium races at ACHS, at 9amCT this Sunday morning, caps Cycling weekend Today's action can be viewed in its entirety from one spectacular spot, Adair County High School. There was a lot to watch before 8amCT. Competition starts at 9amCT, this morning, with the last race of the day coming off at around 1:30pmCT. Chief Mark Harris asks everyone use extreme care driving near the site. CM welcomes official, spectator, news and comments on the event. By Ed Waggener For those not familiar with Criterium Bike Racing, Wikipedia offers a two-minute short course in the basics of this mornings competition: "Criterium: A criterium, or crit, is a bike race held on a short course (usually less than 5 km), often run on closed-off city center streets. This morning, Columbians will have a chance to see some of the nation's top Criterium competitors, when the third contest of the two day event is staged, starting at 8amCT, at Adair County High School. On Saturday, a chilly but gorgeous pre-spring day drew cyclists from at least nine or 10 major colleges and universities to Adair County, KY. Yesterday's weather could not have been better for the two races on Saturday. At the first event, Kellyville Time Trials, Mike Hewitt, the now familiar registrar for these events, who was here for the Green River Races in 2007, said that these schools were registered: Lindsey Wilson College, Purdue University, Ohio State University, U Wisconsin/Madison, U Wisconsin Whitewater, Depauw University, Northwestern University, University of Michigan, and Marian College. Tour de France style road race begins at Purdy. Before noon, cars and support vehicles were seen headed for Point Zero-Purdy Church on Liberty Road, for the beginning of the second, and perhaps biggest event of the weekend, a road race around the same course as the still talked about 2007 event, when truly big-time cycle really took hold in Adair County. The cyclists raced through 25 miles of rugged Adair County roadways, encountering, toward the end of each lap, the agonizing, brutal climb up Little Cake Hill. For that race, onlookers had to choose their favorite viewing spots: Taking in the camaraderie of the start and finish line at Purdy Separate Baptist Church, hanging out at one of the wonderful country stores along the way in Egypt/Absher, Knifley, and Neatsville; taking a station at the top of Dunbar Hill east of Knifley, KY, or one or just a few of the points along the way.Today, it is easier. This morning, at 8amCT, spectators will have a chance to see all the action from a single spectacular point: at Adair County High School, 526 Indian DR, Columbia, KY. (270) 384-2751. Local leaders, businesses, and citizenry have been demonstrating their best to showcase Adair County as a cycling friendly community. Formal welcomes have come from all the top leadership, including:The whole community welcomes Big Midwest Conference Cycling Competition; two day event underway this morning
