Over 200 cyclists in Adair Co, KY, this weekend for bike races

Meet brings excitement of Tour de France racing to Adair Co., KY on Friday and Saturday, March 6, and 7, 2010

By Coach David Grigsby, LWC Cycling Coach

Adair County, KY, will be the Cycling Capital of Kentucky this weekend, with three major Midwest Conference events. Residents of Adair County and spectators from several states will flock to Columbia, KY for three of the most exciting sports events this year.

The Events Include a time trial event at Kellyville and a Tour de France style road race over one of the most rigorous courses these collegiate performers face, anywhere, including the fearsome climb up Little Cake Hill. These two events are on Saturday, March 6, 2010.

On Sunday, March 7, 2010, there will be a criterium race at Adair County High School.

Time trial event starting at Kellyville, KY

On Saturday morning, March 6, 2010, there will be an 8:00amCT time-trial event that begins at the Kellyville Church, 77 Kellyville RD (on KY 682), in the Coburg community of Adair Co, KY, travel to the turn-around point at the intersection of KY 682 and Holmes Bend Road.

Road race beginning at Purdy Church

At 12 noon CT there will be a road race that begins at the Purdy Church, 8004 Liberty RD, Columbia, KY. The 25-mile route turns down Snake Creek RD, right onto Knifley RD (KY 551), right onto Elkhorn RD at Knifley (KY 76), right onto Liberty RD, and right onto Little Cake RD, where it will finish at the top of the Little Cake Hill.

For those unfamiliar with road bike racing, this is Tour De France style racing and is very demanding with groups racing from 25 to 75 miles over very hilly terrain.

Over 200 cyclists will be racing in various categories with both lead and follow vehicles to help ensure the safety of the riders as they race from 1 to 3 laps of this route.

During road race, residents are asked to take extreme care to protect riders

During the race we hope that all motorists who encounter these groups will show courtesy, patience, and give them plenty of room on the road. The safety of these athletes from colleges all over the Midwest is our primary concern.

Residents along route asked to tie up dogs

We also hope that those living along the route will tie up their dogs for a few hours while the race is going on as we want both riders and pets to be safe from potential crashes.

Corner marshals will also be stationed at the various turns to help control traffic, and wave riders through uninhibited.

Criterium race at ACHS, starts at 8amCT, Sunday, March 7, 2010

On Sunday, March 7, 2010, there will be a criterium race at the Adair County High School, 526 Indian DR, Columbia, KY, beginning at 8amCT. The course will be gated off behind and around the school to ensure the safety of the riders.
