Ricky Cannon, John Gossage of Casey Co., KY are KECI Fellows Click on headline for full story, photo For class photo, Click here By Katie Ellis, Coordinator Kentucky Entrepreneurial Coaches Institute Lexington, Ky., (February 26, 2010) - Ricky Cannon and John Gossage of the Casey County, Ky. area are 2 of 30 community leaders who have been awarded fellowships by the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture to participate in the fourth class of the intensive Kentucky Entrepreneurial Coaches Institute. The Institute strives to strengthen entrepreneurship in 22 tobacco-dependent counties throughout South Central Kentucky. Cannon and Gossage have received fellowships valued at $18,000 that cover the cost of participation in eight seminars on rural entrepreneurship lasting two to three days in length and a week-long national study tour exploring rural communities that are thriving as a result of their entrepreneurial efforts. Cannon and Gossage have currently completed three of the eight seminars on rural entrepreneurship. In February and March Cannon and Gossage will complete their training to become a certified entrepreneurial coaches and can begin coaching entrepreneurs in the community. As Fellows in the Institute, Cannon and Gossage have made commitments to promote entrepreneurship throughout the Casey County area and to serve as local resources for entrepreneurs wishing to start or expand businesses. Cannon and Gossage are tremendous assets to the Institute and to the Casey County area. Ricky Cannon grew up on Casey Co., KY, farm Ricky Cannon is a native of Casey County where he grew up on the farm that his parents still operate today. He currently owns and operates a beef cattle farm. Cannon's community involvement includes serving as a member, chief and board member of the Brush Creek Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He also served as a volunteer coach for the youth basketball program for 11 years and as a board member for the local extension office. He currently serves as song leader and business meeting moderator for Poplar Grove Baptist Church and as a member of the Baptist Association's budget committee. John Gossage is member of agricultural, business communities John Gossage has been an active member of the agricultural and business communities of Casey and the surrounding counties throughout his entire professional career. He is a former Chairman of the Casey County Extension District Board. Gossage currently serves as the president of the Casey County Cattleman's Association and is a past director of the Kentucky Cattleman's Association. He has been involved in the banking industry in South Central Kentucky for over 12 years. The Kentucky Entrepreneurial Coaches Institute was formed in response to the transitions in rural communities. "If current self-employment trends continue, one rural worker will be self-employed for every three salaried workers by the year 2015," said Ron Hustedde, Director of the Institute. Fellows will explore ways to help tobacco-dependent counties throughout South Central Kentucky through their involvement in the Institute. The Kentucky Entrepreneurial Coaches Institute is funded by the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board and administered University of Kentucky College of Agriculture's Cooperative Extension Service in cooperation with the Center for Rural Development in Somerset.
