$18,000 Fellowships awarded to three from Metcalfe Co., KY Charlie Costello, Steve Garrett and Jenny Martin represent 10 percent of total 2010 Kentucky Entrepreneur Coaches Institute enrollment. All have already demonstrated outstanding leadership Click on headline for story with bios and photo(s) By Katie Ellis Lexington, KY, February 26, 2010 - Charlie Costello, Steve Garrett and Jenny Martin of Metcalfe County, KY, are three of 30 community leaders that have been awarded fellowships by the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture to take part in the fourth class of the intensive Kentucky Entrepreneurial Coaches Institute. The Institute strives to strengthen entrepreneurship in 22 tobacco-dependent counties throughout South Central Kentucky. Each of trio has received scholarship valued at $18,000 Costello, Garrett and Martin have received a fellowship valued at $18,000 that covers the cost of participation in eight seminars on rural entrepreneurship and a week-long national study tour exploring rural communities that are thriving as a result of their entrepreneurial efforts. Costello, Garrett and Martin have currently completed three of the eight seminars on rural entrepreneurship. In February and March Costello, Garrett and Martin will complete their training to become certified entrepreneurial coaches and can begin coaching entrepreneurs in the community. As Fellows in the Institute, Costello, Garrett and Martin have made commitments to promote entrepreneurship throughout Metcalfe County and to serve as local resources for entrepreneurs wishing to start or expand businesses. The Kentucky Entrepreneurial Coaches Institute was formed in response to the transitions in rural communities. "If current self-employment trends continue, one rural worker will be self-employed for every three salaried workers by the year 2015," said Ron Hustedde, Director of the Institute. Fellows will explore ways to help tobacco-dependent counties throughout South Central Kentucky through their involvement in the Institute. Costello, Garrett and Martin are tremendous assets to the Institute and to Metcalfe County. Charlie Costello is native of Metcalfe Co., KY Costello was born and raised in Metcalfe County and returned home 11 years ago after serving in both the U.S. Army, Airforce, and as a police officer in Arkansas. Land development and a trucking company lead to a successful entrepreneurial spirit which includes farming, produce marketing and enjoyable grandchildren. As member of several veterans organizations, he spends a lot of time doing community and school veteran's education programs. Longtime Metcalfe resident Steve Garrett is industry recruiter Garrett is a life-long resident of Metcalfe County. He is a member of the local chamber of commerce, serves the local industrial board as the director and recruiter, is a member and former president of the Kentucky Beverage Association, and is a member of the Board of Trustees for Campbellsville University. Garrett has a 25 year management background with the Clark owned Coca-Cola operations in Kentucky and Indiana. In 1986 he was named general manager of its Kentucky Coca-Cola division. He served in this capacity until 2006 when he formed his own marketing/consulting company, Visual Power Inc. Steve now works with businesses on creating highly competitive and distinctive brand strategies. Jenny Martin is co-owner of Bluegrass Blueberries Jenny Martin is a native of Michigan, a graduate of Caledonia High School and has resided in Edmonton, KY since 1995. She is co-owner of Bluegrass Blueberries and the Kentucky Blueberry Growers Association, Inc. She is an active member of Grace Union Baptist Church, assists with Vacation Bible School and many other church related activities. She is also a member of the Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce and participates in chamber projects as time allows. She is currently involved in the Metcalfe County Leadership Program. The Kentucky Entrepreneurial Coaches Institute is funded by the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board and administered University of Kentucky College of Agriculture's Cooperative Extension Service in cooperation with the Center for Rural Development in Somerset.
