$18,000 Fellowship awarded to Barbara Armitage, Adair Co., KY New coach will be third KECI Entrepreneurial Coach in Adair Co., KY Click on Headline for full story plus photo By Katie Ellis Kentucky Entrepreneurial Coaches Institute Lexington, KY, (February 26, 2010) - Barbara Armitage of Adair Co., KY is one of 30 community leaders who have been awarded fellowships by the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture to participate in the fourth class of the intensive Kentucky Entrepreneurial Coaches Institute. The Institute strives to strengthen entrepreneurship in 22 tobacco-dependent counties throughout South Central Kentucky. Armitage has received a fellowship valued at $18,000 that covers the costs of participation in eight seminars focusing on rural entrepreneurship, lasting two to three days in length and a week-long national study tour exploring rural communities that are thriving as a result of their entrepreneurial efforts. New Entrepreneurial coach candidate tremendous asset to county Armitage is a tremendous asset to the Institute and to Adair County. She serves the Adair County community as the founder and president of the Adair County Garden Club and as an environmentally responsible citizen and business person. Armitage owns and operates Tucker's Station Farms, a seasonal tree and perennial nursery. She was recently appointed as the chairperson of the Court House Utilization Committee, a group devoted to the restoration and use of the historic Adair County courthouse building. Lives in one of Adair County's oldest home with husband and four-legged 'children' Armitage retired to Adair County in 2004 after having worked throughout the state of Kentucky with Xerox and serving as the Director of Recreation for the U.S. Army, both domestically and internationally. She now resides in one of Adair County's oldest homes with her husband and four legged children. Armitage has currently completed three of the eight seminars on rural entrepreneurship. In February and March Armitage will complete her training to become a certified entrepreneurial coach and will begin coaching entrepreneurs in the community. As a Fellow in the Institute, Armitage has made a commitment to promote entrepreneurship throughout Adair County and to serve as a local resource for entrepreneurs wishing to start or expand a business. When she competes the training, Armitage will be the third Adair County certified entrepreneurial coach, joining KECI graduates Kay Bowman and Sharon Burton. KECI formed in response to transitions in rural communities The Kentucky Entrepreneurial Coaches Institute was formed in response to the transitions in rural communities. "If current self-employment trends continue, one rural worker will be self-employed for every three salaried workers by the year 2015," said Ron Hustedde, Director of the Institute. Fellows will explore ways to help tobacco-dependent counties throughout South Central Kentucky through their involvement in the Institute. The Institute invests in grass-roots leaders and provides them with skills, tools, and the vision to build a solid network of entrepreneurial leaders, advocates and coaches. We believe our volunteer leaders can open up their communities to fresh ideas and regional cooperation for entrepreneurship. The Kentucky Entrepreneurial Coaches Institute is funded by the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board and administered by University of Kentucky College of Agriculture's Cooperative Extension Service in cooperation with the Center for Rural Development in Somerset.
