Clarification on A-Team start in 1986

How Chris Rowe's specialized Tolkien knowledge saved the day

About: ACHS A-teams have built on legacy of great 1986 squad

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

A bit of clarification. 1985 was the year of our first regional championship and it consisted of the three you mentioned plus Chris Rowe. In 1986, the year of the KET Scolastic Challenge championship, I had already gone off to college to learn about COBOL. I was replaced on that team by Brian Melton, if my memory hasn't grown as dim as my brothers.

Our practice sessions consisted mainly of gathering at one of our homes and playing Trivial Pursuit. There were never any fisticuffs, but the games were pretty intense. The biggest competition at the actual constests was between Russ and Shane as to who would buzz in to get to answer the math, science, and current events questions before the other. We would defer to Chris for the literature. I would occasionally get to answer some sports or oddball question that my many more years of experience (1) would allow.

One memory that this discussion has jogged happened during a prelimary round at the regional tournament in 1985. The contest was going along mostly as described above, with Russ and Shane answering all the questions, when they up and asked one on Tolkien. The name of the tree-like creatures in The Lord of the Rings was required. Russ, Shane, and I, of course, all looked toward my brother, who was, in turn, looking out the window admiring the tree-like creatures in the school yard. He came to his senses just before the time expired and saved our confidence in him knowing such important things.

Congratulations to the A-Team and Coach Reliford from an A-Team alum.

s/Fred Rowe
