ACHS A-teams have built on legacy of great 1986 squad Russ Walker, Shane Arnold, Fred Rowe and Chris Rowe are still referenced in current team practices. Their pioneering efforts are the foundation for Tradition of Excellence which continues to grow at Adair County High School About: Thrilled that ACHS still sets academic competition standard By Brett Reliford, Coach, Adair Co. Academic Teams 1986 was the first year for KAAC Governor's Cup "statewide" competition. At that time, that is correct: that it was new to the state and only a few metro schools and a few regional outlier schools that were involved. Pikeville High School won the first ever Governor's Cup State Championship according to KAAC records. However, Adair County was involved in a quiz bowl State Championship win in the KET Scholastic Challenge, which (I think) was a year before KAAC and the current Governor's Cup format started up. All members of that team would be proud to know that they still get referenced in current team practices and even in discussions with some high school faculty who remember those competitors (and their successors who were also successful). It is a good foundation that the school was built on and a motivation for our renewed successes in the current era of the Governors Cup format, which has undergone quite a few changes and now involves over 20,000 students across the Commonwealth with nearly a 100 percent participation rate among the eligible school districts across the state. -Brett Reliford This story was posted on 2010-02-23 02:59:19
