Pioneer Status on Cemeteries requirements given To qualify for Pioneer status, cemeteries would have graves of individuals living in Kentucky prior to 1800 or a cemetery of over 50 percent of existing headstones have a death date prior to 1850 By Lila Ford and Lee Ann Jessee After contacting the Kentucky Historical Society here is what we have learned concerning a Pioneer Status on a Cemetery. According to the Kentucky Hisotrical Society a Pioneer Cemetery is: Cemeteries of individuals living in Kentucky prior to 1800 or a cemetery of over 50 percent of existing headstones have a death date prior to 1850. (Would need to be 1849 or earlier on death date.) We are going over our records at the library and we are hoping that individuals that have cemeteries on their farms will check the dates out on those headstones, if anyone has one that they think would qualify for a pioneer status please contact the library and we will try to see if they would be able to apply for a pioneer cemetery status. According to the Kentucky Historical Society grants were given out in 2001 and in 2003 for pioneer cemeteries. We do not know when gratns will be available again but we can see about recording the cemetery as a pioneer cemetery. This story was posted on 2010-02-15 09:05:55
