Ming Ke recital at Slider is Wed., Feb. 17, 2010 Concert will feature pipa, or Chinese lute By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Affairs COLUMBIA, KY - The sounds of an ancient Chinese instrument will be heard at a Feb. 17 concert at Lindsey Wilson College. Ming Ke will perform on the pipa, or Chinese lute, at 7pmCT on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, in the Lindsey Wilson W.W. Slider Humanities Center Recital Hall, 155 Blue Raider DR, Columbia, KY. Her recital is free and open to the public. It is part of the 2009-10 Lindsey Wilson Cultural Affairs Series. The pipa is a four-stringed Chinese chordophone whose history dates from about 200 B.C. An internationally renowned pipa virtuoso, Ke has appeared as a soloist with principal orchestras in China, Japan, Spain and the United States. Described in the Cincinnati Enquirer as a performer whose "performances sparkle with grace and expression," Ke is a master interpreter of traditional and contemporary music for the pipa. A native of Nanjing, China, Ke studied at the Fine Arts College in Nanjing, graduating with a bachelor's degree in pipa performance in 1982. She made her formal debut in 1985. Ke taught pipa for 10 years at the college while giving solo concerts on the pipa and ruan, another Chinese string instrument. She also gave orchestral performances with principal orchestras in China and Japan. She received prizes at several Chinese music festivals and competitions. Ke settled in the United States with her family in 1993. Solo and orchestral appearances soon followed with performances from Arizona to New York in festivals, universities, performing arts centers and Chinese gatherings. Ke's appearances in her adopted city of Cincinnati have included numerous solo concerts as well as performances with the Cincinnati Symphony, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra under the batons of Erich Kunzel and John Morris Russell. Ming Ke will perform on the pipa at 7pmCT on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, in the Lindsey Wilson College, W.W. Slider Humanities Center Recital Hall, 155 Blue Raider DR, Columbia, KY.
