Everybody can participate in the Backyard Bird count About: Terry Partin: Back Yard Bird Count is easy, entertaining By Tony L. Harvey To add to what Mr Partin has so nicely said, I would like to encourage those who aren't able to get out and about to let them know that one can count birds from the comfort of their own home if they have a good vantage point to observe from. With school out today, and with the Federal Holiday, everyone can take part. A sunroom makes a perfect place to conduct your count. Sure, it seems best to be able to get outdoors in beautiful Adair County, but that it isn't a neccessity. For those who live within the city limits and are able to put up a feeder that's a very easy way to count the birds which visit your feeders or backyards. Even those in offices have windows, and there is always bird activity outside. And it isn't the numbers of birds you see that matters. What matters is that by simply taking down the data, entering the time, and the other information requested, we are helping the scientists with the big computers know so much more about the health of the bird population. Those who live out in the county, have a wonderful opportunity to help out in the 2010 GBBC as well. No matter what the amount of acreage on which you live, there will be plenty of areas to observe and count from, for sure. The numbers look to be just a little lower than last year and I'm thinking the weather has kept some from getting out this year. Even with that being taken into consideration, I believe that Adair County is providing some very useful numbers, regardless of what the rest of the country is doing this year. For me, I aim to give today an all-out effort. I'd like to see Adair County stay Number 1, though the bigger reward is that the more who participate, the better the stewardship of the land is likely to be. I want to encourage everyone to keep up the great work. Thanks to each and everyone of you out there who has participated in this years count. I want to encourage everyone to keep up the great work.-Tony L. Harvey This story was posted on 2010-02-15 01:19:15
