Metcalfe County shows sharply better employment for month

Jobless rate up for month in Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Taylor and Russell Counties

While jobless rates for December 2009 were up in all seven area counties, versus December 2008, Metcalfe County had a much improved jobs market, dropping from having Kentucky's worst jobs picture, with 17.8% joblessness in November 2009, to 14.4% for December 2009.

Here's how the December 2009 figures look in the immediate 7-county area, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training:
  • Taylor Co., jobless up for month 0.2% to10.3% unemployment
  • Casey County, jobless up for month 0.8% to 10.5% unemployment
  • Adair County, jobless up for month 0.6% to 11.6% unemployment
  • Cumberland County, jobless up for month 1.0% to 13.4% unemployment
  • Green County, jobless up for month 0.3% to 12.0% unemployment
  • Metcalfe County, jobless down for month 3.4% to 14.4% unemployment
  • Russell County, jobless up for month 2.5% to14.5% unemployment
Nationally, the December unemployment rate was 9.7%, while the Kentucky wide rate was 10.4%.

Year to year comparisons found 119 of Kentucky's counties with higher unemployment. Only Union County in far western Kentucky bucked the trend, with 0.4 percent lower unemployment, at 10.1% for December 2009.
