Homeless count to take place in Adair Co., KY

Community assistance is needed. Count affects Federal funding. Last year, 41 homeless and 254 precariously housed persons were counted in Adair County, KY.

By Jennifer Summerford & Missy Richard

Kentucky Housing Corporation, the state housing finance agency, and the Kentucky Interagency Council on Homelessness are coordinating the 2010 Point-In-Time Count of homeless persons in every county in the state. The Adanta Group is the volunteer coordinator for the Lake Cumberland Region.

The count will take place in Adair County between 12 midnight and 11:59pmCT, on Thursday, January 28, 2010. The count is very important because it helps determine the amount of federal funding available for homeless assistance in the state. That is why your support and the support of the community are so important to the count.

During last years count, 41 homeless and 254 precariously housed were counted in Adair County. Many of Kentuckys homeless live in less visible places. These individuals and families are living in substandard housing conditions, are doubled- or tripled-up with family or friends, or are expecting evictions within seven days from a private dwelling with no expectation of having a nighttime residence or a community support network.

They are referred to as being precariously housed. While these Kentuckians are not counted in the final homeless numbers, their needs are no less taxing to community resources. During the 2009 Point-In-Time Count, there were 6,795 individuals who were precariously housed across Kentucky (excluding Fayette and Jefferson counties). This is an almost 30 percent increase from 2008 and could be an indication of what the total homeless number will look like when the 2010 count is complete.

More information about the 2010 Point-In-Time Count is available on the Kentucky homeless Web site, www.kyhomeless.org.

At this time I would like to ask for your support and participation in this important event. We will need all persons and organizations that come in contact or provide services to homeless individuals, to participate in this count on January 28. We also need volunteers within each community to help organize, publicize and conduct the count. In order for the count to be accurate, it is vital that we recruit as many volunteers as possible.

Please contact me to volunteer your support, schedule a meeting, request the surveys, or to train volunteers. This is a crucial event and a huge undertaking; we cannot do it without everyones support and cooperation. Thank You.
