Adair Heritage Association holds reorganization meeting Ellen Zornes, Chair of the Adair Courthouse Preservation Funding Committee, chaired the meeting for the reorganization of the Adair Heritage Association a the Trabue House at which dues and meeting dates were set and plans discussed for completing the the funds drive for the courthouse preservation. Meetings for the new Adair Heritage Association will be each second Thursday, at 6pmCT, at the Adair County Public Library, 307 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY. Dues will be as follows:
Adair Heritage AssociationThe Adair Heritage Association inherits a 501(3)(c) non-profit corporation. According to an AHA statement, "The purpose of the Adair Heritage Association is to save the individuality of our community through the preservation of our historic buildings andour unique heritage." Dues to the association are tax exempt. Directors of the old Adair Heritage Association, Jim Blair, Richard Phelps, and Shirley Anderson, met earlier, Ellen Zornes said, and resigned to turn the leadership over to the three chairs of the Courthouse Preservation Committees: Ellen Zornes, Barbara Armitage, and Ellen Zornes. Additional members of the board, and permanent officers will be elected at a subsequent meeting. The officers will be a President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Until permanent officers are elected, co-signers on checks will be Ellen Zornes and Lee Ann Jessee. At the moment, the biggest need is to complete the fund drive for the first phase of the preservation, the deconstruction of the 1974 additions to the building and the restoration of the exterior. An estimated $50,000 is needed for this phase, Ellen Zornes said. With a pledge of $6,800 from the Adair Fiscal Court, and other contributions, the preservation fund thermometer on the courthouse lawn is now at $10,000. Zornes said that with that start, fund raising can now go into high gear. The committee will be looking at grants from governmental units and private foundations, and expects many caring Adair Countians, who may live in Adair County, or away, will start flowing to fund. CJE suggests group have ceremony when courthouse vacated Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton told the group that the Adair County Court Clerk's office, the Adair County District Court, and the Adair Circuit Court will be moved to the new Adair Judicial Center during the last week of February, 2010, with plans for the new Judicial Center to begin operating at the 201 Campbellsville ST location on March 1, 2010. She suggested that the Adair Heritage Association use a day within the moving time to have a ceremony marking the transfer from the historic old courthouse to the new location. "We're moving history," Circuit Court Clerk Dennis Loy told the gathering. "When you think about it," he said, "justice for Adair County has been at that site for 200 years. After March 1, that era is closed. Period." Mr. Loy said that he thought the Heritage Association should come up with fitting ceremonies marking the transfer, and endorsed a suggestion by Adair Progress Editor Paul Hayes, that a marker telling about the history of the county in the location in the center of the Square, be erected. Group joins Preservation Kentucky At the suggestion of Vonnie Kolbenschlag, the group agreed to authorize a $30 membership in the Preservation Kentucky. Mrs. Kolbenschlag said that membership would mean that the AHA would be kept abreast of grant opportunities. One will be a meal with chef Robert Flowers, whose training is in classical Kentucky and Creole/Cajun cuisine, at a date to be determined.
