UMC Committee on Relief has major presence in Haiti By George Kolbenschlag Columbia UMC had a major pitch to support the effort in Haiti. As a matter of fact Pastor Neil Janes gave an outstanding sermon this morning on the subject of "God didn't do it" re Haiti (The title is mine, not his). We had a special collection today. I gathered some data on one of my favorite charities, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) which has had a major presence in Haiti for years. As a matter of fact their CEO was in the Montana Hotel in Haiti at the meeting with some other non government organization folks when the earthquake hit. He died there. He was with two other UMCOR administrators. All three were trapped for 50 hours, but the other two were rescued and survived. Charity Navigator gives UMCOR it's four-star rating, which only goes to 1% of the charities it reviews. UMCOR has pledged that 100% of the money sent in support of Haiti will go directly to their work there. They have a very low administration and fund-raising expense because the individual churches fund their administrative costs. The boast that 97% of the gifts they receive go to their relief programs.
