Whitney Ballenger of CU is NAIA, NCCAA National Player of Week

By Chris Megginson, CU Sports Information Director

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - The high from Whitney Ballinger's 40-point game Jan. 2 continued Tuesday, January 5, 2010, as the 6-foot-3 junior forward from Carrollton, KY, was named the Division I National Player of the Week by both the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).

Monday, she was selected as the Mid-South Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season and fifth time in two years.

This is her first national weekly honor for both national athletic associations, as she leads the NCCAA in scoring with her 21.1 points per game average and is sixth in the NAIA. She is second in the NAIA for total scoring (296) and total rebounds (143) and third for total blocks (42).

"I'm really pleased for her, mostly because her stats don't always show her contribution to the team," CU head coach Ginger Colvin said. "She's so unselfish that a lot of times her points may not show what she has done to help us win."

Ballinger led Campbellsville University to a pair of wins in New Orleans over the weekend by averaging 27 points, 13.5 rebounds, six blocks and 3.5 steals in two games against a pair of NAIA Top 30 teams. She shot 45 percent from the field and 72 percent from the free throw line in the games.

Ballinger was the leader both nights, posting a career high 40-points in addition 13 rebounds and was one block away from her school record with seven in an 83-73 win over No. 21 Loyola University of New Orleans. The next day, she hit two free throws with five seconds remaining to give 10th-ranked CU a 71-70 victory at No. 27 Xavier University (La.). She had 14 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks.

"Obviously she's very deserving of the honor, because in both games she did what you'd want an All-American to do. We were down by 13 to a very good Loyola team and she put us on her shoulders. The next day we struggled the entire game with Xavier, but she was able to get us the win."

Ballinger will look to lead Campbellsville (13-1) to its 14th win January 8, 2010, when Olivet Nazarene University comes to town for a 7pmET game.NAIA Player of the Week Nominees: Sirena Medrano, Southwest (N.M.); Rachel Oswald, Columbia (MO); Kaitlin Dudley, Union (TN); Keshia Catten, Westminster (UT; Brittany Powell, Xavier (LA); Katie Nelson, Lee (TN); Lana Keith, Southern Nazarene (OK); Erin Hannemann, St. Xavier (IL); Colleen Planeta, Point Loma Nazarene (CA)NCCAA Player of the Week Nominees: Ashley Deans, King (TN); Heather Seyfred, Bethel (IN); Aubrey Siemon, Cedarville (OH); Allyson Wilson, Malone (OH)
