Obituary: Jay Wheeler, 80, Adair Co., KY

Mr. Wheeler was the head of a prominent South Adair County family. He was a well known farmer and was a member of Hadley's Community Church.

Jay Wheeler, age 80 years, of the Chance Community of Adair County, KY, passed away Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 5:10amCT, at his home, surrounded by his family.



He was born November 23, 1929, the son of the late Tilton and Lillie Janes Wheeler, and died Thursday, December 31, 2009, at his home in Chance, Adair Co., KY at the age of 80 years, 1 month, and 8 days.

Survived by his wife, Ida Loy Wheeler, of Columbia, KY and the following.

  • Eight children: Linda Hendrickson and husband J. W., Connie Wheeler, Phyllis McHam andhusband Jerry Kearney, Donnie Wheeler, Pat Downey and Danny Downey, Diane Hatcherand husband Doug, Sandy Rodgers and Ricky Rodgers all of Columbia, KY, and Jeannie Cox and husband Kerry, Mannsville, KY

  • Fifteen grandchildren: Natasha Newton and husband Chris, Kim Carter and husband Scotty,Cherrish Lowe and Arron Sharlow, Machelle Perry and husband Chris, Matthew McHam and wife Nicole,Nicole McHam, Melissa Patrick and husband Jeff, Brandie Phelps, Lakesha Downey,Eric Hatcher, Kandace and Alan Webster, Chase Cox, Mercedes Cox, Jacody Downey, and Sunni Moore

  • Fourteen great grandchildren: Taylor Newton, Tanner Newton, Layndon Carter, Jaylan CarterBrittany Perry, Austin Perry, Hunter Perry, Blaine Pennington, Colby Pennington,Lexie Feese, Kalie Grace Downey, Brighten Moore, Malaine Burton and Olivia McHam

  • Two sisters: Rita Osbourne of Louisville, KY, and Jewel Reece of Columbia, KY

  • Two brothers: Charles Wheeler of IL. and Avery England of Columbia, KY

  • A host of other special friends and family
He was preceded in death by a son: James Eldith Wheeler. He was also preceded in death by the following brothers and sisters: T. L. Wheeler, Aaron Wheeler, Jack Patton, Burt Wheeler, Jim Nat Wheeler, Dukie Wheeler, Herbert Wheeler, Onia Wheeler, Blanche Rowe, Regina Loy, Myrtle Yarberry, Bea Moss, Gladys Hamilton, Fanny Rowe, and Sophie Roberts.

He was a member of the Hadleys Community Church and was a farmer.

There will be a private funeral service and burial and no public visitation Family has requested no flowers, memorials are suggested to Hadley's Community Church for distribution of food for needy children and families in Adair County or Gideon Bibles and may be left at the funeral home. Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home in charge of funeral arrangements.
