Historian Michael Watson will portray Dr. Samuel B. Fields From information submitted by Lila Ford, Adair Co. Genealogy Society The Adair County Genealogical Society and the Adair County Public Library will present historian Michael Watson in "An Evening with Dr. Samuel B. Fields" on Monday night, January 4, 2009, at 6pmCT, at the library, 307 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY. Dr. Fields was born in Columbia in 1804 and died here in 1872. He practiced medicine with Dr. Nathan Gaither. He was also active in real estate transactions and politics. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Party Convention in 1860. He was postmaster in Columbia in 1845. and was a trustee to the Methodist Episcopal Church in Columbia in 1840. His home was located at the corner of what is now West Fortune and Burkesville Streets in Columbia, where the First & Farmers branch bank is today. He was also a stockholder of Columbia College Joint Stock Company, which was later Columbia Institute. The company built Male and Female High School here. Mr. Watson, who now resides in Harrodsburg, KY, is an Adair County native and the community's foremost historian. He has written two authoritative volumes on the history of Adair County. The performance is free and open to the public. It is one of a series of presentations which have increasingly grown in popularity. Over 70 attended the presentation by Mr. Richard Phelps as Judge James Garnett. Adair County Review, Genealogical Society The Adair County Review is a quarterly publication of the Adair County Genealogical Society, it is received by all members of the Society. It is published in the Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Membership is open to anyone interested in the preservation of history of Adair County and the surrounding counties of Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor. Annual dues are $15.00. Membership renewal is due in January of each year. Meetings are held at the Adair County Public Library, 307 Greensburg St. Columbia, KY, on the first Monday night of each month, at 6:00pmCT.
