Raising the Dome II, including album

Click on headline for introduction plus album

When craftsmen from Campbellsville Industries and crane operators from the Tim Edwards Co., both of Campbellsville, KY, came to Columbia to insert a structure to raise the height of the decorative rotunda dome on the new Adair Judicial Center, several photographers were on hand.

ColumbiaMagazine.com posted pictures as the work was done yesterday, and additional ones may be added. The album includes photos by Robert Harmon and Jerry Burton, as well as staff photos, . This album is meant to make it easier to find memories of the day in one place.

Raising of the Dome II happened in three stages:
  1. Removing the dome installed in 8 months earlier.
  • Assembling the new height extension structure on the ground and lifting it into place over the entrance
  • And the final ascension of the original dome to its new splendor atop the structure
  • It was grand theater on Thursday morning, December 17, 2009. It was completed within about four hours, during which traffic was halted most of the time on Merchant Street, even as work continued inside the building and out in an effort to make the new tentative move-in date of the last week of February 2009 a reality.

Now the adornment can be seen

Raising the Dome I was on April 7, 2009, of this year. At that time, there was wide complaint that the decorative feature could barely be seen.

A couple of options laid out in subsequent meetings of the board overseeing the project were:
    1. To add a clocktower which would, at the site, obscure the entrance and draw visitor's attention away from the dome. No one would ever even notice whether the rotunda dome could be seen or not, or,
    2. Two, raise the decorative dome to make sure it would be seen.
The latter course was chosen. Now the decorative dome is quite prominent, from many perspectives.Scroll down for photos

In the center, half of the structure which will raise the rotunda dome to a more visible height is in front of the entrance to the courthouse. On the left, a team from Pyles Excavating is doing grounds preparation for landscaping. A look at the Raising of the Dome II is expected sometime this afternoon.
