Vote FOR improves in four years. In 2005, tax lost by 73%-27%; this year, it's 62.65% AGAINST to 37.35% FOR. In 2005, vote was 2,326 AGAINST to 864 FOR

By Ed Waggener

With all 16 precincts and the absentees counted, the Nickel Tax has failed by an unofficial vote of 1156, or 37.35% votes FOR, to 1,939 (62.65%) against. The last precinct to be counted, Milltown, gave the tax 60 votes FOR, 87 AGAINST. The margin of defeat fell dramaticall, to 773 votes. In 2005, a vote on a similar issue was defeated by 1,452 votes.

While one precinct, South Columbia No. 2 passed the measure overwhelmingly, 101-36, the school tax carried only one other precinct, East Columbia, and it by a margin three votes, 131-128.

The outcome appeared to be certain when the first precinct, Eunice-Pellyton, came in with a vote of 7 for, 125 against. School tax supporters could take a small bit of comfort in knowing that would be the most lopsided vote of the evening, The vote was an improvement over the 72.31% AGAINST, 27.69% FOR in 2005.

The only question on the ballot was:
"Are you for or against the Adair County School District levying, as authorized by KRS 160, a building fund assessment of 5.6 cents per hundred dollars of assessed property value to meet facility needs for our children."?"

Billy Curry: Fixture of Adair County election days

2009-12-17 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Billy Curry's long experience helps make Adair County elections run smoothly. He's one of four election officers who start the day before polls open and stay at the Annex until the last precinct is counted. There are four members of the board: The County Court Clerk, Sheila Blair; and County Sheriff, Ralph Curry, plus Curry, a Republican, and his Democratic counterpart, Ben Loy. The clerk and sheriff serve because they hold the office. Curry, the owner of a screen printing business, is a product of two great educational institutions: Jericho School and Adair County High School. He's served on the board, continuously, longer than any other member.
