Some laid-off workers eligible for special assistance

Provisions apply to laid off workers at Toyotetsu in Somerset, KY. The company has been certified adversely affected employer

From Cathy Lindsey, Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet

FRANKFORT, KY - Workers laid off by Toyotetsu America Inc. in Somerset may be eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), the Office of Employment and Training (OET) in the Department of Workforce Investment announced Thursday, December 10, 2009.

The U.S. Department of Labor has certified the company as an adversely affected employer under the federal Trade Act, which provides assistance to employees of businesses and industries hurt by import competition.

The certification covers workers who were laid off by the company on or after September 14, 2008. Laid-off employees who exhausted their unemployment insurance benefits before they were called back to work or found another job also may be eligible for retroactive benefits.

Qualified workers may apply for financial assistance, training and job search and relocation assistance. This assistance will be available through Nov. 30, 2011.

Affected workers should inquire about benefits as soon as possible at a local OET office. Applications may be filed at the Somerset Career Center, 410 E. Mount Vernon, Somerset. The telephone number is (606) 677-4124.
