The Center for Rural Development now accepting grant applications

Adair County local government units eligible for funding for community strategic planning

By Sharon Dodson

The Center for Rural Development in Somerset announced today it is accepting grant applications from local government units in cities and counties across Southern and Eastern Kentucky, including Adair County, for funding support from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) for community strategic planning.

Through its Developing and Implementing Community Strategies Program, The Center will award $145,000 in ARC mini-grant funding to communities to encourage and support improved community strategic planning throughout the region.

The Center will be awarding two cycles of mini-grants in 2010 for either the successful creation of a strategic plan or the implementation of priority community development projects identified in existing strategic plans. The Center also is encouraging the use of technology solutions in the implementation and execution of these plans and projects.

The application period for the first cycle of funding will be open through Jan. 4, and grants are expected to be awarded in February.

Individual project awards will range from $5,000 up to a maximum of $10,000. All projects must be completed within a six-month period.

The application period for the second cycle of funding will be announced at a later date. In 2008, The Center awarded a total of $170,000 in federally funded ARC mini-grants to 13 counties and cities in Southern and Eastern Kentucky to help advance local economic and community development plans.

"Stimulating innovative and sustainable economic development solutions in the region we serve is at the core of The Center's mission, and these grants target communities that have the ideas--but lack the resources--to move them forward," Lonnie Lawson, CEO and President of The Center, said.

"The grants awarded during the last funding cycle in 2008 made a significant impact on each of the counties and cities that received them, and served to underscore the critical importance of strategic thinking and planning regardless of the size of the community," Lawson continued. "We fully expect this new funding will build on that beginning and impact our region to a much greater extent."

Recipients in 2008 included the cities of Inez, Corbin, Beattyville, Liberty, Mt. Vernon, and Paintsville; and McCreary, Bell, Morgan, Lee, and Letcher counties. Bell County and the city of Corbin received funding support in both funding cycles.

Counties eligible to apply for ARC funding support through The Center include: Adair, Bath, Bell, Breathitt, Casey, Clay, Clinton, Cumberland, Estill, Floyd, Harlan, Jackson, Johnson, Knott, Knox, Lawrence, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Lincoln, Magoffin, Metcalfe, Martin, McCreary, Menifee, Monroe, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Rockcastle, Russell, Wayne, Whitley, and Wolfe. One of these signs could save your life or the life of someone you love

(ADV) FFA Address Marker orders may be placed at Four Adair Co., KY businesses
We are announcing a new option to make it more convenient for people to place orders and pick up signs puchased from the Adair County FFA. Two local businesses have agreed to provide a location for people to place an order and pick up their sign when it is finished. You can now place an order at:

  • Day and Day Feed and Pet, 1011 Campbellsville RD, Columbia, KY

  • M & W Milling, 510 Short ST., Columbia, KY

  • Hardscratch Grocery, 7289 Hwy 55 South Road, Columbia, KY. In the Glensfork Community of Adair County. Phone (270) 384-4671

  • Burton Ace Hardware, 314 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY. Phone (270) 384-2696
We will pick up the orders every few days and call the person when the sign is ready to be picked up. Signs are still $15 and are a hot item for Chistmas since they fit perfectly into a large stocking. They are about the best gift I can think of for the person that already has everything and is hard to shop for. If a person wants a sign by Christmas, they will have to get their order in by December 15, 2010. which is the last day of school before break. Orders placed after this date will not likely be filled until after the New Year. -Kirby Hancock, Advisor, Adair County FFA
