John Halsey: All for new school, but thinks information needed Writer thinks stating the tax issue being as being for or against kids is over the line. But we think that is exactly what the issue, this time, is; that this issue is an emotional one. It is purely and simply about Kids. About Columbia kids and Knifley kids. About all the children of Adair County. And it is about education and progress. -CM About: Wants list of those who don't want tax Ed, I feel you've stepped over the line. Those who question the tax are not against children, education, progress or God, Mother and apple pie for that matter. I for one resent the feeling of being herded into supporting something on the basis of emotional arm twisting and a community led guilt trip. As I've stated before, I'm all for a new school but I want to know what the vision entails. A sound building with adequate space for expansion and the necessary mechanicals to support current and future needs in a safe and comfortable environment would seem to be a good place to start. The problem is that we don't even know if we are going to get that much. On the other hand some fear we may be authorizing a state of the art facility that would put the most expensive Ivy League college to shame. All we know at this point is that the new tax will be long outlast whatever building we put up because to end it when the new facility is paid for "would muddy up the water" according to the superintendent. s/John HalseyKnifley Thanks, as always, for your courteous contribution to the dialogue. We do differ. This issue IS an emotional one. It is purely and simply about Kids. About Columbia kids and Knifley kids. About all the children of Adair County. And it is about education and progress. I really believe that a YES vote is a vote for the kids, for education, and for progress in Adair County, and consequently, a no vote is a vote against those values, pure and simple. All the local media are publishing and broadcasting as much information on what the tax will mean for Adair County. The specifics not readily available from the media are easily obtainable from the school system. Adair Countians are being asked to pay a very small amount in local taxes to get a very large return. We like to get as much as we can in grants, contributions, and from fundraisers. But the Adair County Way, we believe is to give as much as we can for the common good, and that, on occasion, means paying a little more in taxes. In the past five years, Adair County has received huge infusions of public and private funds to build new roads, new water systems, new buildings, and new schools, without a single additional local tax dollar being spent. Right now, the one key to making the years 2010-2020 the Adair County decade is how much responsibility we take for our own destiny. In the end, a Yes vote is a vote FOR "children, education, progress or God, Mother and apple pie for that matter," as your list puts it. And it is a vote FOR all the school children of Adair County.-Ed This story was posted on 2009-12-07 02:49:51
