The Band: A manifestation of a commitment to excellence

"All the adjectives, adverbs, and attempts to describe the awesomeness of their achievements fail us." -BJF

By Billy Joe Fudge

Most who watched on television or made "the trip" to New York City have already documented through photos and words the ultimate excitement, pride, and satisfaction all have experienced to some degree or another during this most special time for all our band past and present, our community, and our area of the state.

I, as most of your readers might guess, have a few comments about this marvel, this sensation, this spectacle we here in South Central Kentucky have in the Adair County Band. All the adjectives, adverbs, and attempts to describe the awesomeness of their achievements fail us. It is no wonder given the indescribable nature of their phenomenal exploits.

With eighteen (18) Kentucky State Championships in the last twenty-four (24) years they are the Mark of Excellence. And when we consider that during the six years they did not win the championship they were runner up five (5) times and third place the other time it becomes even more awesome. Additionally, if I understand correctly, they are the only band in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to make the finals competition each and every year since 1986.

To excel is to surpass, exceed in performance, go beyond normal limits, or transcend a standard. What we have witnessed over the last two and a half decades with the Adair County Marching band, staff, administration, boosters, and with this community is a commitment to excellence beyond description.

I certainly hope that folks don't think we are gloating for we are not. We are just so proud and thankful for the work ethic, commitment and striving for excellence exhibited by all.
