Shamarie reports in: Again from under the Hudson River To the Greatest Community, the Greatest Fans, in the World. Thanks for making this Wonderful Day possible! By Shamarie Claiborne Dictated to ColumbiaMagazine.com world headquarters proudly located in the hometown of the World's Greatest Marching Band As usual, it seems, I'm on my cellphone in the Bluegrass Tours bus in the Lincoln Tunnel under the Hudson River, headed "home'," this time, to New Jersey. I'm proud to say that we got everybody over to New York. And now we've gotten everybody back to our hotel in New Jersey. I just called my Dad, Jimmy Harper, at home on Appen Avenue, and he said the show on NBC Tv couldn't have been better. He said everybody there in Columbia is walking on air and that there is excitement about the band everywhere he's been. That's so great to know. From streetside in Manhattan, the show was perfect, too. We are so proud of these kids. These great musicians. These wonderful students. These good people. These great athletes. I think you have to give them that. They are athletes too. Athletes with an almost military discipline. They were up at 2 A.M. this morning, perfecting (I know we can never use that word in marching band context, but it's hard not to occasionally drop in a "perfect" when you talk about these kids). You'd almost have to give the spectators that, too, that they are athletes too.. People were packed on the sides of the street, standing for up to three hours to see the parade. Dusty and I made our way through a city block solid with people. And when we emerged, another person from the country said, "How do you do that?" I just told her that if I could make my way through a 100 acres in The Holler, it's no problem to get through a city crowd with a map and street names. When the band came down the street, everybody, from our core supporters to people from around the world, seemed to sense they were seeing a very, very special group. I knew we were at our best when I saw a woman from Brazil break into an impromptu dance when she heard the Adair County Band music.. These kids such make everybody's heart sing, whether they even know where Columbia, KY is or not. Daddy told me the show went off without a flaw from his front row seat on NBC television. We thought it did, too. And that kiss seen round the world.... I don't think Les Herbst will ever forget it. I'm sure the world won't. What theatre! I'll have some pictures to you soon. Right now, most of us are exhausted. We're just waiting to get to our rooms to rest. We've just been eye-witnesses to what may be Adair County, KY's greatest moment. -Shamarie This story was posted on 2009-11-26 12:19:29
