KY has new mobile pharmacy unit for disasters, emergencies From KY Health and Family Services Cabinet The Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) and the Kentucky Pharmacists Association (KPhA) announced today that a new mobile pharmacy unit has been acquired to provide pharmaceutical services in support of disasters and emergencies. "The acquisition of this mobile pharmacy unit will be an asset to communities in Kentucky, especially in the event of a serious public health emergency when health and medical systems might be overwhelmed with people seeking treatment," said William D. Hacker, M.D., commissioner for public health. "The unit can be quickly deployed at or near the scene of a disaster or emergency anywhere in the state to provide on-site pharmaceutical services to our citizens in times of need without overburdening local pharmacies." The 28-foot-long mobile pharmacy trailer can be sent quickly to the site of an emergency to allow pharmacists to provide a wide range of pharmacy services, including patient counseling and care, immunizations, public health education, medication preparation and dispensing. "This state-of-the-art mobile unit provides pharmacists across Kentucky with the resources to care for patients in times of emergency and during other public health missions," said Jessika Chinn, PharmD., president of KPhA. "We are very appreciative of DPH's leadership with this project and for allowing the Kentucky Pharmacists Association to be a partner in caring for the citizens of the commonwealth during times of need." The mobile pharmacy unit can utilize KPhA member pharmacists as volunteers to provide patient and pharmaceutical care.
