The Columbia Woman's Club Christmas Home Tour will be Sunday, December 6, 2009, from 1pm to 4pmCT. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at any of the home son the tour. Included in the tour is a reception at the Trabue-Russell House at 201 Jamestown ST, Columbia, KY.
In addition to the reception, three homes are on this year's tour:
- Hundley House, 301 Lindsey Wilson College, Columbia, KY: The home of all Lindsey Wilson College presidents and their families since the early 1950s is a traditional 1 1/2 story brick home. It was planned in a large part by Mrs. V.P. Henry, with beautifully arranged public and private spaces. But no one could have imagined the growth the college would experience 50 years later, and as the college has grown, so, too, have the demands on the home.
This year, the college completed the first major addition to the home, with a new kitchen, butler's pantry, enlarged dining room, large family room opening onto a large balcony, and a master suite. Current residents, Bill and Elise Luckey, have preserved the beauty of the home's original formal areas, while providing inviting informal spaces students and friends of the college can enjoy today. It should serve the college and its first family for at least another 50 years.
- Mike and Thelma Robertson's Home at 106 Lowe's Lane, Columbia, KY was built in 1966 for Earl and Frances Huddleston by Bobby Joe Keen. THe California contemporary ranch was designed by Donald Schotz of Toledo, OH. The Robertsons bought it in 2008 and began a year long renovation/restoration.
The home is spacious and linear, with lots of floor to ceiling glass and cathedral ceilings. The stone entryway and fireplace walls seem to inspire the neutral palette with accents of turquoise and soft green. Much of the home's original furnishings remain in the home, including the Italian light fixtures. A large black and white Buddha still overlooks the living room while a fountain trickles softly nearby. The kitchen/den has new cabinetry and county tops, but coordinates beautifully with the original solid wood paneling and starburst clock that are original.
- The home of Brad and Sandy Conover, 106 Guardina ST, Columbia, KY is the newest home on the tour. But its inspiration came from an early 1800's Federal style house in Perryville, KY.
The home is actually a front addition to an older 3-room cottage. Work began on the addition in 2006 (and Sandy says it was completed last week!) while the family "camped out" in the rear portion. Once the framing, plumbing and sheathing was completed, Sandy and Brad began the tedious work of wiring, insulating, trimming, floor, and painting on their own. It has Truly been a labor of love - and family. Despite being "new," the house is true to the period that inspired it, with wide plank floors, light colored walls with dark trim, and multiplane double hung windows. Relax in a wing chair in their kitchen and you just might think you are in another century.
