It is probably because of Frances Salyer's kinfolks, her perfect dad, Lloyd Wilson of Liberty, and the Luttrell family of Dunnville in Casey County, who seem to be getting a deer or more a day over there. It could be that Ryan Beard, the great deerslayer who lives in Adair County and teaches in Casey is the reason. Maybe just his influence, the aura of his hunting exploits, inspires hunters of all ages to reach new heights. It could be because in Adair County, Rerun Cornelison has not yet gotten a deer, or because Johnny Vaughn is off in far parts, exotic locales like Washington Co., to do his hunting. In any case, some of the swagger is gone in Adair County sportsmen, as Green County maintains its huge lead, and Adair has dropped to third place. Rerun is doing his best. He's out every day. Despite his slump, he offers no excuses, no wimpy alibis, just simple facts on why the Adair County hunt is not so good. "The deer are all too far away this year," he said, "and too little. There aren't as many of them any more. Hunters in Eastern Kentucky killed all the deer over there and now they are over here killing all the deer we have," and of course, he places the decline squarely at the feet of the gumment. "What deer there are all on the Corps land," he laments. Renown hunter Johnny Vaughn, who gets his morning coffee at Rerun's and who operates out of the Robertson RD community, a golf cart neighborhood in Jericho, sees it differently. "If you look out from my place, there's trophy deer everywhere," and that's scarely a mile from Rerun's world headquarters. Deer hunting bragging rights is not everything. Adair County remains in 1st place in Kentucky, in the alphabet. We do have that going for us. At least until someone renames a county Aaron or Aardvark. This story was posted on 2009-11-19 04:07:38
