CU opera performances of Elixir of Love Nov. 22, 23, 2009

Cast for "The Elixir of Love" includes Debora Morais, Ahhyun Im, Samuel Hong, Tae Eun Moon, Jonathan McCoy, Lindsey Kleyer, Aubrey Skutt

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - Campbellsville University will present the opera "The Elixir of Love" by Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848) Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 3pmET/2pmCT and Monday, November 23, 2009 at 8pmET/7pmCT, in The Gheens Recital Hall in Gosser Fine Arts Center located at 210 University Drive in Campbellsville, KY.

The performance is free and open to the public and will have open seating (first-come first-serve).



"The Elixir of Love," an opera set in the old West during the 19th century, was composed and first performed in 1832 in Milan, Italy. The original librettist was Felice Romani, but this production is using an English translation by Ruth and Thomas Martin.

The opera features the following characters: Alicia, a young and rich country girl, portrayed by Debora Morais of Brazil or Ahhyun Im of South Korea; Jimmy Reno, a poor farmer in love with Alicia, portrayed by Samuel Hong of South Korea; Sergeant Bill Corey, head of the soldiers in the calvary, portrayed by Tae Eun Moon of South Korea;

Dr. Dulcamara, a traveling salesman (medicine man) and quack doctor, portrayed by Jonathan McCoy of Ekron, KY; and Glorianna, a young single girl in the town and friend of Alicia, portrayed by Lindsey Kleyer of Simpsonville, KY, or Aubrey Skutt of Columbia, KY.

The CU Chamber Choir under the direction of Dr. Frieda Gebert will be the chorus for the production.

Dr. Mark Bradley is the stage and Musical director and is assisted by Melissa Askew.

All are students in the Music Department of Campbellsville University. The opera is directed by Dr. Mark Bradley, with Eldia Carla Farias, pianist. The opera is free and open to the public.

Tenor Samuel Hong: Jimmy Reno in the opera

Samuel Hong, shown above after his spectacular Sunday matinee performance, will be cast again tonight as Jimmy Reno, in Gaetano Donizetti opera, "The Elixir of Love." The tenor's rendition of hauntingly sad Una Furtiva Lagrima, The Furtive Tear, one of opera's most familiar and most beautiful arias, was perfect in his Sunday, November 22, 2009 matinee performance. The opera, a Campbellsville University School of Music Opera Workshop Production, will be presented again tonight, Monday, November 23, 2009, at 8pmET/7pmCT. It is free and open to the public.
