CWC: Everyone should pay something
to support the society in which they live

CWC: Is it fair for everyone to have to pay for better school building?

Commentary by Robert Stone

My first inclination was to say that this letter was most un-Christian but not everyone is a Christian. But it espouses a very unfriendly lifestyle. Does the writer think that nothing will ever happen to him where help from someone will be necessary? And won't he want that help to be from someone who has been trained to give the best help?

I have given money to individuals and organizations because I believed in what they were doing even though I didn't agree with every last detail of what was happening. If I insisted on that, then I would be acting like a dictator myself. I have paid taxes where nothing was going to come back to me personally but then again I have received some benefits that I didn't personally pay for.

Everyone should pay something to support the society in which they live but no one should expect that the payments and the benefits are going to be perfectly matched person by person.
Our needs shape our lives,
our wants shape our daily work,
our dreams shape our world.
For our own sakes, if we don't have kids, we should set out to set an example and be an encourager to some young person in school or recently out of school who is working to get started in a career. -Robert Stone
