LWC Homecoming 2009 last one on basketball weekend

In 2010, Homecoming will feature 1st Football game in 75 years

By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public AffairsCOLUMBIA, KY - Lindsey Wilson College's 78th Homecoming will mark the end of an era at the 109-year-old college.

For the final time, the college will celebrate its alumni and friends on a basketball weekend when it holds Homecoming 2009 November 6-8, 2009.

That's because in 2010 football returns to Lindsey Wilson after a 75-year absence. LWC is scheduled to resume football with its first home game September 4 against Notre Dame (Ohio) College, and the 2010 Homecoming will be celebrated during a football weekend.

So this year's Homecoming is appropriately named "Dancing Through the Decades."

"We wanted this year's theme to reflect the almost eight decades of Homecoming that have been celebrated at Lindsey Wilson," said LWC Alumni Director Randy Burns.

The weekend will also have a distinctive Adair County flavor as three Adair County natives will be honored by the LWC National Alumni Association at the Alumni Homecoming Banquet, to be held Saturday, November 7, in Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center.

Columbia native Ben C. Burr '64, who now lives in of Bardstown, KY, will receive the Distinguished Service Award. Burr is a second-generation LWC graduate as his parents, the late John and Dean Wilson Burr, also graduated from the college.

Milltown native Susan C. Eisenback '81, who now lives in Louisville, KY, will receive the Special Achievement Award. Her fraternal grandparents, Arney Williams Glasgow and Celeste Shirley Glasgow, met and began their courtship at LWC. And her parents, Glenn Shirley Glasgow and Frances Tutt Glasgow, also attended LWC.

Nancy Moran Fouser of Versailles, KY, a sixth generation Kentuckian, will receive the Distinguished Alumna Award. Fouser can trace her Adair County roots to ancestors who settled in county in the 1820s. She continues to own her family's farm, located south of Columbia.

Others to be honored at the Alumni Homecoming Banquet

Jerald L. Bryant '94 of Bowie, MD., who will receive the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award.

LWC supporters Thomas P. and Julialice Carter of Danville, KY, will be named Honorary Alumni. Thomas Carter has been a member of the Lindsey Wilson Board of Trustees for more than 25 years, and Julialice has been a lay leader in The United Methodist Church.

When the first Homecoming was held at Lindsey Wilson, the modest schedule included a men's basketball game and a banquet for alumni. Over the last eight decades, however, Homecoming has expanded into a three-day weekend celebration, preceded by a weeklong of campus activities for the student body.

Homecoming Gala will be inaugurated this year

Although the final one centered around basketball, this year's LWC Homecoming will feature the inaugural Presidential Homecoming Gala. The event will be held Friday, November 6, 2009, in Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center and officially kick off the Homecoming weekend.

Another new edition to the weekend is the Rally in the Valley, a pep rally to be held 10pmCT Friday, November 6, in the valley behind W.W. Slider Humanities Center.

Also November 6, the Lindsey Wilson National Alumni Association will sponsor the Alumni & Friends Golf Scramble at the Pines at Lindsey Wilson and the 9th-annual Morris Shepherd '53 Pingpong Tournament.

"We'll also have campus tours throughout the weekend," Burns said. "Lindsey Wilson is in the middle of a $27 million expansion. We are completing the 73,000-square-foot Holloway Health & Wellness Center, installing the football playing surface at the outdoor sports stadium and beginning to build a 186-bed residence hall. There's a lot of dirt moving on campus, and we know alumni are eager to see the Lindsey Wilson of the future."

This year's basketball games include the Lindsey Wilson Men's Basketball Classic on November 6-8 in Biggers Sports Center. In addition to the Blue Raiders, it will feature Campbellsville (KY), University vs. University of Michigan-Dearborn and Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College.

Blue Raider basketball season begins

The Blue Raider men open their 2009-10 season when they play Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College 8pmCT Friday, November 6, and then Michigan Dearborn 4pm CT Saturday, November 7, 2009.

The LWC women's basketball team also opens its 2009-10 season Homecoming weekend. The Blue Raiders are ranked No. 17 in the NAIA preseason poll, They meet Union (KY) College 2pmCT, Saturday, November 7, 2009. The Bulldogs are coached by LWC alumnus Tim Curry.

The weekend also will include several class reunions, Running With the Blue Raiders 5K Run/Walk, the Homecoming parade, and the crowning of the Homecoming king and queen.
