Pair scaled Green River Knob, to elevation 1,789

Casey Co., KY, has many good knobs to explore
About Kentucky Color: Smoky Mountains North
photo of Green River Knob from Wheeler Hill, by Billy Joe Fudge

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

With permission from the land owner, a friend, the late Donnie Crawhorn, and I climbed this knob a few years ago. At the highest point they have an elevation marker embedded that reads 1,789 feet, if I remember right.

My friend then climbed a tree about 10 or 15 feet up and declared himself at 1,800 feet to be the highest climber in this part of the state.

The knob actually drops in elevation as you go north to north east and rises to 1,537 in what is called Dye Knob which they have set a radio tower on top. Casey County has many knobs with decent elevations that provide a challenge. Would love to go back, and now with the leaves falling you will be able to see out across the country.

There are many good knobs in Casey County to climb but remember you need to seek permission from the land owner.s/Mark V. Willis

Thanks for sharing this wonderful adventure. After reading Billy Joe Fudge's story, I drove out to HRS Gallery, where Jeff Scott has some fine Jonathan Apples for sale now, to look at the Green River Knob again. It was so clearly visible, another reminder of the gentle grandeur of these hills. The knob is sort of our Mt. Fuji, without the volcanic activity. If you go back, I hope you'll share the adventure with CM readers, and perhaps, write a book. -EW
