Very important 2010 census talk at Chamber luncheon today

Every Adair Countian counts. The 2010 Census means more than just bragging rights, though that's an important consideration for the Chamber, local government, and county citizens. The total can play a major role in making the 2010-2020 period the Adair County Decade in Kentucky. If growth pattern of 1990-2000 has continued, Adair County population would be in 19,365 range in 2010.

The guest speaker at today's monthly meeting of the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce will be Dale Turner, Partnership Specialist with the US Census Bureau. Mr. Turner will detailing the U.S. Census Bureau's effort to to have every Adair County resident counted in the census.

While the U.S. Census Bureau has workers hired to conduct the census, the Chamber encourages every Adair Countian to voluntarily help with the count.

This year's census is one of the most anxiously awaited ones, according to Mayor Pat Bell of Columbia, KY, who is expecting Columbia to reach at least 5,000 population, he said. CJE Ann Melton's office is working w closely with the U.S. Census Bureau, hoping that an accurate count will put Adair County past the 18,000 mark for the first time since the historic high in the 1940 census, when the county's population reached its peak at 18,856.

After reaching a modern low point of 13,307 in 1970, Adair County's population has shown a steady increase, with a dramatic 12.3% ten year improvement in the 1990-2000 decade, when the population reached the 2000 total of 17,244.

Both CJE Melton and Mayor Bell have stressed the importance of an accurate count. State and Federal grants and other entitlements are dependent on the number of residences in each jurisdiction.

For Kentucky, an accurate census affects the number of U.S. Congressional seats apportioned to to the Commonwealth, among other considerations.

Mr. Turner will speak immediately following the optional (on your own) luncheon at 11:45amCT at the Cranmer Dining Center, 430 Helen Flatt DR, Lindsey Wilson College. Columbia, KY.
