Rainy night experiment shows value of Address Markers

Having name and number on mailbox just doesn't do the jobBy Barbara Armitage

It's like night and day:About a week ago last Sunday an ambulance with its emergency lights flashing turned around in our driveway at Tucker's Station. It was just before sundown, just at that time of day when it can be hard to see things at a distance clearly and I wondered if they were on an emergency run and who on Bull Run might be hurt.

Every second counts when EMS is trying to get to you. I began running through who had the blue address markers up on their mailboxes and who didn't.

Later in the week I was driving home after dark and for the first time I really paid attention to my neighbor's mailboxes. When I got to my own this is what I saw. The mailbox at Tucker's Station is bright red with 3 inch "reflective" numbers on both sides. Using both my high beam head lights and the flash on my camera I shot this photo.

I could barely see the mailbox much less the "reflective" numbers on it. I could however see our blue address marker very clearly. If the time comes when we need emergency personnel at Tucker's Station I want them to be here just as quickly as they can.

If your excuse for not buying an address marker is "I already have my name or house number on my mailbox" you might want to think again. -Barbara Armitage

It's like night and day: Address Markers make all the difference

2009-10-19 - 1535 Bull Run RD, Columbia, KY - Photo by Barbara Armitage. Its like night and day: Some folks think that having names and reflective letters on mailboxes is enough to let Emergency Response drivers find their home. They probably wrong. Barbara Armitage shows, on left, a day time photo of her husband Wayne putting the finishing touches on their address marker. They also have big numbers on their mail box. But guess what shows up in the headlights at night? The address marker, and that's about all, she says.
