LWC Women's Soccer Hosts Top-5 Battle Friday vs William Carey

By Dan White, Asst. LWC Sports Information Director

The mettle of the second ranked Lindsey Wilson College women's soccer team is put to the test on Friday as it hosts fifth ranked William Carey (MS) University in a battle of NAIA top-five teams.

The Blue Raiders, who jumped from third to second in Tuesday's NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll, will kick off against the Crusaders at 7pmCT at Walter S. Reuling Stadium, 151 Blue Raider DR, Columbia, KY..

Lindsey Wilson (7-2-1, 1-0-0 MSC) dominated in its last outing, taking apart Campbellsville (KY) University 12-0 at home on Tuesday. In the tune-up for William Carey, Blue Raider freshman midfielder Mia Persson scored five goals against the Tigers.

William Carey (9-0-0, 0-0-0 GCAC) remains undefeated after a 2-0 win on Sept. 26 over Oklahoma City University in the University of Mobile (AL) Soccer Classic. Crusader junior forward Natalia Nino, the team's second leading scorer with 19 points, connected on the game-winning goal in the 36th minute.

The Blue Raiders are 1-3-1 all-time against William Carey, including a 0-0-1 mark at home. The Crusaders earned a shutout win in the last meeting on Oct. 12, 2000 in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Lindsey Wilson is no stranger to ranked opponents this season, having played six of 10 games against teams in the polls. The Blue Raiders hold a 3-2-1 record in those contests, including a 3-0 win in their latest on Sept. 19 against then-No. 23 Graceland (Iowa) University.

After Friday's contest, Lindsey Wilson will have played five top-10 teams ranked third, fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth this season.

While Lindsey Wilson holds the No. 2 spot in the national poll, the Blue Raiders are No. 1 in the NAIA in total shutouts with six.

William Carey has a pair of players with a knack for scoring crucial goals in Nino and senior forward Jeana Erickson. The Crusader duo is tied for seventh in the NAIA in game-winning goals with three. Erickson is also 14th in the nation in total goals with 10.

Lindsey Wilson enters a stretch of five Mid-South Conference games after Friday, starting at 5 p.m. on Oct. 7 against University (KY) of the Cumberlands at Walter S. Reuling Stadium, 151 Blue Raider DR, Columbia, KY.
