Campbellsville U launches campaign to fund turf, lighting Click on headline for full story with photo(s) By Linda Waggener, feature writer A unique speaker, a winning Tiger football game and the kickoff of a campaign to fund professional turf and lighting were highlights of a super athletics weekend at Campbellsville University, Campbellsville, KY. Former Marshall University head coach Jack Lengyel, renown for having rebuilt the Marshall football program in the 1970s after tragic crash of Southern Airways Fiight 932 which was returning the Thundering Herd home after a road loss on November 14, 1970 killed all aboard, was the special speaker invited to help launch the $1.2 million campaign. The campaign was presented as the biggest news for HIG Field since 2006 when a new name was given to the CU football stadium, Ron Finley Stadium. Coach Finley, recovering from a life threatening health crises, was there for the game, sitting in his van just a few yards from the plaque which reads, in part: "In honor of Coach Fon Finley, head football coach 1988 - 2002, for his personal commitment and devotion to Campbellsville University, re-establishing the Tiger Football Program, influencing the lives of hundreds of young men, both on and off the football field, and instilling a legacy of Christian leadership that defines Campbellsville University Football..." Coach Finley chatted for a few moments with Coach Lengyel, two legends meeting over the game they gave their career lives to. Lengyel spent time with supporters, with Tiger football players and with leaders of the university during his visit. Just before the game start, President Michael V. Carter presented Coach Lengyel with the Campbelllsville University Leadership Award. CU beat West Virginia University Tech, 16-6, in a Mid-South Conference East Division victory Saturday on a rain-soaked field. This story was posted on 2009-09-27 13:39:04
