Green Co., KY receives grant to preserve local records

FRANKFORT, KY - Green County Clerk Billy Joe Lowe has received a $19,350 grant pm September 15, 2009, from the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) to preserve and manage local government records. KDLA is an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

The funds will be used to microfilm selected permanent records. "Now the indexing system will have an additional 14 years of entries available for users, who won't have to use hardcopy volumes," said Lowe. "It will reduce wear and tear on the books and access will be much easier."

The Local Records Program is dedicated to the preservation and management of Kentucky's local government records of enduring value. "Over the past 25 years, grants have been given to local agencies to protect vital records and make sure they are accessible to the public," said KDLA Local Records Program Manger Jerry Carlton.

Sixteen local public agencies have been awarded a total of $406,604 from fiscal year 2010 Local Records Grant Program funds. During the program's 25-year history, a total of more than $16.1 million has been distributed across Kentucky and included grants to all 120 counties.

KDLA provides equitable access to quality library and information resources and services, as well as helps public agencies ensure that legislatively mandated documentation of government programs is created, efficiently maintained, and made accessible. For more information on KDLA resources, programs and services visit www.kdla.ky.gov or call 502-564-8300 ext. 315.
