Gardening: Alice8 2009 doing bug work at Tucker's Station

Click on headline for story with portrait of Alice8 2009

By Barbara Armitage, President
Adair County Garden Club

I have always named my garden spiders Alice, but as the gardens grew so did the number of Alice's, so this year I have started adding a suffix. Alice1 through Alice6 live in the garden next to the porch and Alice7 lives over by the pond.

Wayne was delighted to find Alice8 this morning while he was cleaning out around the wood pile. It gave him an excuse to call a halt to the days work. We will allow Alice8 to feed this morning on the bugs of her choice and then later tonight before she pulls in her web I will move her to a safer spot.

Insects of KY: Miss Alice8 2009

2009-08-23 - 1535 Bull Run Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Barbara Armitage.
"Miss Alice8 2009/ Could she be sending a message to Wayne? She keeps writing WA over and over again," writes Tucker's Station Farms' Barbara Armitage, of the colorful garden spiders, Argiope Aurantia The "WA" the spider is writing is a stabilimentum, whose presence gives the black and yellow garden spider another of its names, "Writing Spider." Though they are considered harmless to humans, they do put the frighteners on some. The garden spider dines on mostly bad bugs. Aphids, flies, grasshoppers and wasps comprise a large part of thier diet.
