Governor Beshear proclaims Community Gardening Week

From Commonwealth News Center

FRANKFORT, KY - Joining a national initiative launched by Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, Gov. Steve Beshear today proclaimed the week of August 23-29 as Community Gardening Week statewide."Public gardens provide a unique way to bring neighbors together, while shedding light on the important issues of sustainability and environmental awareness," said Gov. Beshear. "I am proud to set aside a time to celebrate the fusion of two of Kentucky's most important qualities: our tight-knit communities and our agricultural heritage."

Community gardens across the Commonwealth - in both rural and urban areas - are encouraged to take part in the weeklong festivities by hosting farm-to-table dinners, community education sessions or farmer's markets.

This week is just one part of the Governor and First Lady's commitment to environmental advocacy.

This spring, inspired by the White House's desire to raise "green" awareness, First Lady Jane Beshear joined with leaders from the Finance and Administration Cabinet, Western Hills High School FFA, Kentucky Proud, and Access Food Pantry to develop and grow the inaugural Governor's Garden.

The Governor's Garden is a part of Mrs. Beshear's larger Green Team initiative, which strives to promote sustainability, energy efficiency and environmental preservation.

For individuals who want to begin their own community or home gardens, assistance is available as part of the Governor's Garden initiative at Cooperative Extension Service offices located in every county across the Commonwealth.
