Information wanted on Henry and Richard Skaggs land This item was originally intended for a Metcalfe Co. publication; it didn't make it this week in time for the Third Sunday in August at Sulphur Well, KY this weekend, August 15 and 16, 2009. It is reprinted here on Ginny Keen's promise to send her cousin's story of "The Tree," about a beloved gnarly hickory at the the Boston Cemetery in Metcalfe County, to be reprinted in a future ColumbiaMagazine.com. By Ginny Keen For many years I have researched the land off of Tommy Scroggy Rd. My family cemetery is there and I have traced that land all the way back to the beginning of Kentucky.< I was mainly interested in Henry and Richard Skaggs' land. Richard was a Longhunter and in the mid to late 1700's was a party to some of the first people in Kentucky. Richard had probably 1,000 acres, mainly around Three Springs and some near the Brush Creek. Henry owned about 2,000 acres around Sulphur Well and on towards Edmonton and Greensburg. I have mapped out all these acres is anyone is interested in seeing the the 3rd Sunday in August 2009 at Sulphur Well, KY. I have also been interested in tracking the church next to the Boston Cemetery. I believe it was there as early as 1843 as there is a stone there reflecting that. I think at one time it may have started out as the Little Barren Separate Baptist Church. It may have changed to the Bethel Meeting House Baptist Church and after its demise they may have moved up the road and changed to Pink Ridge Baptist Church. This cemetery land was owned by the Craddocks, Waddy Thompson, Nathaniel and Catherine Craddock and then was bought by J.H. Boston. The Boston's then sold the land to W.T. Scroggy ca 1922 and 1924. The Scroggy's have owned the land since. This piece of land is one of the earliest pieces of land developed in Metcalfe Co. Anyone interested, please feel free to stop by my table and chat awhile.
