Jayne Hopkins is named LWC student activities director New director came to Columbia with her husband, an athlete in the college's cycling program and would up, herself, as part of school staff Click on headline for story plus picture By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Relations COLUMBIA, KY - Jayne Hopkins and her husband, Brandon, got more than they counted on when they looked at Lindsey Wilson College.The couple was initially drawn to Lindsey Wilson because Bandon was interested in finding a school where he could finish his college degree and also participate in a collegiate cycling program. Brandon enrolled at the college, but Jayne also wound up at Lindsey Wilson - as the school's new student activities director. Cralle SUB is also part of her area of responsibility As the college's student activities director, Hopkins is responsible for programming many of the extracurricular activities for Lindsey Wilson undergraduates. She also supervises the Cralle Student Union Building, a hub of student activity. Although she has only been at the college since early July, Hopkins has already had a busy summer. She coordinated the college's final two freshman orientation days of the summer, known as EDGE days, and she's now planning for opening weekend, Aug. 14-16. A native of the Chicago area, Hopkins comes to Lindsey Wilson from Raleigh, N.C., where she was an elementary school teacher who specialized in teaching English as a second language. Hopkins said she and her husband were attracted to Lindsey Wilson because of the campus' atmosphere. "We really enjoyed our visit to the campus because the people were so friendly and we felt comfortable here," Jayne said. The college's religious heritage and its openness to many faiths was also "a huge strong point for us," Hopkins said. Lindsey Wilson officials said they are glad Hopkins has joined the college's student services program. "We are excited to bring Jayne and her talents to Lindsey Wilson, and we look forward to what she will bring to this office," said LWC Dean of Students Chris Schmidt. Has background in program planning Hopkins said she was interested in serving as Lindsey Wilson's student activities director because she has a background in program planning and she was eager to work with college-age students. "This position gives me an opportunity to do something I love, which is event planning," Hopkins said. "I especially look forward to seeing the creativity of college-age students and listening to their ideas." Hopkins said that a strong student activities program complements a college's academic programs. "Student activities should enhance students' academic experiences," Hopkins said. "One thing that has impressed me about Lindsey Wilson is that it has a good balance between academic and extracurricular programs." Hopkins has also been impressed by the college's mix of international students. Last school year, the LWC student body had more than 100 international students from more than 40 countries. "I think it's really neat how Lindsey Wilson emphasizes international diversity and exposes students to a lot of diversity," she said. This story was posted on 2009-08-05 14:36:45
