Coming of New KY 61 sparks memories of Old Sparksville Recollections of the Page, Harvey, Loy, Gaskin, and Wheeler stores and Sparksville Magazine, the oral one Click on headline for full story, photo By Billy Joe Fudge When I was a lad there were three stores in downtown Sparksville with the Page's, the Harvey's, and the Loy's owning and operating these establishments.About two blocks (I like the sound of that) North of Downtown there was a store and garage owned and operated by, I believe, a Gaskin. Anyway Ronnie Gaskin lived there. Ronnie was a southpaw with seemingly very little athletic ability (of course I was no Magic Johnson either), but could pull a wheelie for a mile on his bicycle. He had one of the first high handle bar, banana seat bicycles around at the time. There was a fifth store in Sparksville at that time. It was located in the Northern Suburbs of Sparksville at the intersection of Harvey's Ridge Road (East 768) and Hwy 61 and was operated by the Wheelers. Of course, the eccentric Ms. Gladys Wheeler operated the store for several years after the passing of her husband, Gordon.Ms. Wheeler operated the Sparksville Magazine from this location. The Sparksville Magazine was an oral magazine easily accessed by phone or by droping in for a Pepsi and a Zero Candy Bar. I suppose Ms. Wheeler spoiled me with her oral magazine because till this day I have not been able to read and eat at the same time. I guess there are some things you must learn while you're young. No, there is no typo with the Ms. preceding her name. She was the first Ms. I ever knew. She was a Ms. before the advent of NOW(National Organization for Women which formed in 1966) and their efforts to eradicate female courtesy titles which denoted the marital status of the lady being addressed. I believe that NOW was very shortsighted and close minded. I think they should have lobbied for men to expand the choices beyond their very limited, singular, courtesy title of Mr. For folks like me with a highly-developed genetic tendency for putting my foot in my mouth, it was right handy to have the definitive qualities of Miss. and Mrs. to help me avoid some reoccurrences of Foot and Mouth Disease.
